>>>History

Tanzed was founded in 1997 as an NGO, sending volunteer teachers from the UK to work alongside local teachers in government primary schools. The volunteers worked to improve the standard of teaching, particularly in English language. This need arose because the language of instruction in primary schools is Swahili, but in secondary school all subjects are taught through English. The few children that progress to secondary school struggle to succeed as they have a poor command of the language of instruction. Tanzed was set up to try and bridge the gap. Our work quickly developed into more general support of primary education by working on other projects in the schools and local community. Tanzed volunteers became involved in literacy, health and income-generating projects.

>>>Aims

Tanzed works in rural communities in the Morogoro region of Tanzania . We aim to:

  • improve the standard of English teaching in primary schools
  • improve school management, principally parent and community participation
  • support libraries and literacy projects
  • support community projects in the areas of water provision, health (chiefly HIV/Aids) and environmental issues

>>>Current Work

We are currently working in 12 primary schools in the Morogoro region of Tanzania where we are focusing on developing and ensuring the sustainability of Tanzed’s community projects. These projects use the schools as a focal point within the villages to benefit the wider community. we are also looking to recruit volunteers to work alongisde teachers in the primary schools. >>>The Organisation

Tanzed has no paid staff in the UK and is run by its trustees and volunteers. Our Morogoro office is run by Tanzanian staff - the Tanzed coordinator is supported by an assistant and field officers. They work with the local communities to manage the projects with support from volunteer board members.

>>>Funding

Tanzed’s work is funded by Trust funders, NGOs and corporations both in the UK and in Tanzania. Currently these include the Equitable Charitable Trust, the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust, the Four Acre Trust, BP Tanzania and Irish Aid. We are very grateful to these and other funding bodies for supporting our vital work. We also run a successful "Friends Programme" which enables supporters to donate a small regular amount. This ongoing support is invaluable to us. For information about how to support the organisation, please click here.
