>>>Learning centres

Resources in Tanzanian primary schools are generally very limited and children are given little opportunity to read. Tanzed’s learning centres have been set up in twelve schools. These are run by trained local teachers and essentially function as a library and resource centre for pupils, teachers and the local community. The centres provide a colourful new learning environment which motivates teachers and learners and gives access to resources which would otherwise not be available to them. They also serve as an excellent venue for Tanzed to deliver other components of its work.

>>>School Management

In rural Tanzania schools are traditionally run by teachers and monitored by authorities. This leaves parents with little involvement in the education which shapes the futures of their children. Tanzed’s school management project concentrates on raising awareness within school committee members and parents to empower them to make decisions about the schools where they send their children. It does this through regular seminars which teach the members about their roles, duties and responsibilities.

>>>Water

Tanzed’s objective of improving school education extends to clean and safe water provision. A large number of Tanzanian children do not currently have access to clean water and many Tanzanian schools do not have a water supply on or near the school site. Tanzed has so far fitted water pumps at five schools and work has already started at other Tanzed schools.

>>>HIV/AIDS

In a country with a high HIV/AIDS prevalence rate, there exists an urgent need to raise awareness among young people of the dangers of the disease. Tanzed works with local organisations and health professionals to deliver seminars to pupils, teachers, parents and members of the community. The seminars take place in Tanzed’s Learning centres. Each Tanzed schools has nominated a teacher to supervise an HIV/AIDS committee of pupils. The committee acts as the peer education group to inform and mobilise fellow pupils in the school.

>>>Nursery Education

The Tanzanian Government is committed to providing free nursery education for all, but resources are limited. Funding is rarely available to provide more that an empty classroom. Tanzed is committed to providing nursery classrooms in all the schools we are working in.
